The Call of the Wild by Jack London

The Call of the Wild is a must read novel. For those of you who are going to say “I read that book in elementary school, so it must only be a kids book,” you need to stop what you're doing right now (well, stop after you finish reading this blog) and discover it's genius. The Call of the Wild is not just a book for little kids. It is a descriptively vivid masterpiece that easily creates a feature film inside your head. Jack London is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to writing. The realism of his writing and the artistry of each enchanting description makes the book come alive and will hook you into reading without stopping.
The Call of the Wild is centered around a dog living in the Yukon, and before you say “only kids books are about dogs,” I implore you to think again. I fell in love with the many different characters in the book, as well as the main dog in the story, Buck. Buck is taken from his home in California and sold to a courier in Alaska who needs Buck as a member of his dogsled. Buck becomes accustomed to this frighteningly new hard way of life, and becomes a new dog through the hardships he faces.
Jack London was able to perfectly capture the life and actions of these animals, which is one reason why the book is so good. It is also important to note that this novel is not narrated in the first person, so there are no animal conversations. In fact, the dialogue in the book is slim, but please don't let that discourage you. The setting is beautifully and meticulously detailed but also flows brilliantly and with ease. By the end, you will end up wishing the novel was longer than a mere 76 pages.

  1. I do not want to read a children's novel about a dog.

    A cat, maybe.

  3. I never read The Call of the Wild as a child and just finished it. I'm well into adulthood and I can recommend this book to any adult. I cried my eyes out during the book and at the end. I'm an animal lover and found the book fascinating.
