Inkspell

Inkspell
By Cornelia Funke
Book cover for Inkspell

Inkspell is the second book in the Inkheart trilogy. It's a fantasy story about characters that come to life out of a book. But, not only do the characters from a book come alive but people can be transferred over into other books stories. Inkspell takes place in the fictional story world of the fictional book Inkheart, which is what the first book is named after. In Inkspell, a whole family is transferred into this fictional story world and must learn to survive.
Cornelia Funke is a talented writer that is descriptive and full of imagination. The plot of the story twists and turns and turns back on itself with clever story-telling. Inkspell is a fun read but just like the first one it is way too long. It's over six hundred pages, which could have easily been cut down to under five hundred. The first couple of hundred pages are great but then it drags and becomes a bit of a bore. The dialogue becomes predictable and the characters turn flat. I really wish these books were shorter.
Overall, it is a good young adult book that is creative and packed full of adventure. I'm sure everyone at one point or another has wondered what it would be like if a book came to life or what it would be like to live inside a book's story and Funke delivers magically.
